Word of the Day: Synergy

Word of the Day: Synergy

In this series, I will take the Word of the Day from Dictionary.com and craft a short piece of creative writing around it.  My goal is to embrace the meaning of the word in some unique way, all the while trying out different styles, rhythms and characterizations.  It is as much an exercise in creativity as it is an exploration of grammar. Enjoy!

Synergy

By Alex Seise

“Your strength, my brains,” the cat whispered to the sprightly Great Dane. “It’s a delicious synergy with irresistible spoils.” His tongue darted out, dampening his thin whiskered lips. The anticipation was enticing to him.

“Mama doesn’t like it when I spoil stuff,” barked the dog, ever so obedient to the overlords. The cat rolled his slitted eyes and flicked his tail in displeasure.

“Well, Ham, mama’s not going to like this, either,” retorted the feline, flexing his long, sharp claws. “But I told you, I’ll share the best parts with you. Trust me, just this once.”

The conversation was cut short by the clicking of a key in the heavy front door. The cat looked at the dog, nodded and leapt to the shelf next to the entrance. On the top slab, a heavy vase had been pushed to the very edge.

“Get ready,” he hissed quietly as sunlight poured into the room.
