Word of the Day: Spumescent

Word of the Day: Spumescent

In this series, I will take the Word of the Day from Dictionary.com and craft a short piece of creative writing around it.  My goal is to embrace the meaning of the word in some unique way, all the while trying out different styles, rhythms and characterizations.  It is as much an exercise in creativity as it is an exploration of grammar. Enjoy!

Spumescent

By Alex Seise

It rattled and shook like a person possessed, dripping light brown liquid with every convulsion. Shrieks and puffs of gray steam tore through the air above its metallic cap, making for quite the spectacle to all those assembled in the dingy little place. As one valve closed, another clicked open; and from a different spigot, spumescent milk oozed, topping the murky brown sludge with a pseudo-pure coating of fluffy white cream.

“Double cappuccino,” hollered the man in the black apron as he swung the concoction onto the counter. “DOUBLE CAPPUCCINO!”

The mousy woman with frail brown hair scampered to the front of the line. She smiled at the fearsome man and wrapped her small hands around the oversized white cup.

Rejuvenation, she thought. Sweet, milky life.
