Word of the Day: Exilic

Word of the Day: Exilic

In this series, I will take the Word of the Day from Dictionary.com and craft a short piece of creative writing around it.  My goal is to embrace the meaning of the word in some unique way, all the while trying out different styles, rhythms and characterizations.  It is as much an exercise in creativity as it is an exploration of grammar. Enjoy!

Exilic

THE SECOND ENTRY IN THE #31SHIVERS SERIES LEADING UP TO HALLOWEEN 2014

By Alex Seise

Under one of the many black, leafless trees in the middle of the forest, the maiden opened the chest of carved sycamore root, just like the court wizard had instructed.

Inside, the Exilic Prince’s pale white heart continued to beat, louder than a soldier’s war drum now that the chest was ajar.

“Return to us,” she whispered, dipping her head into the box to kiss the disembodied organ. “Return to me.”

A distant wail flew through the spaces between the trees, and the maiden jumped to her feet. He’d find her soon enough, and she always rose in the presence of royalty.
