In this series, I will take the Word of the Day from Dictionary.com and craft a short piece of creative writing around it. My goal is to embrace the meaning of the word in some unique way, all the while trying out different styles, rhythms and characterizations. It is as much an exercise in creativity as it is an exploration of grammar. Enjoy!

Salem let out a gut-wrenching yowl, a grating noise that could be heard upstairs and down. Never one to back down from a challenge, Moose flew from his perch on the counter and sought out his opponent. Salem deked behind a first-story basket as the smaller cat stalked each carpeted stair, one at a time. Suddenly, the furry clawed terror flew at him from the landing below and knocked him down with a playful tackle. Such is the carefree life of two happy brothers who spend their days sleeping and playing and eating and watching birds from the windows, always side by side.
