Word of the Day: Claptrap

Word of the Day: Claptrap

In this series, I will take the Word of the Day from Dictionary.com and craft a short piece of creative writing around it.  My goal is to embrace the meaning of the word in some unique way, all the while trying out different styles, rhythms and characterizations.  It is as much an exercise in creativity as it is an exploration of grammar. Enjoy!

Claptrap

By Alex Seise

He sucked on the ice cube, letting the remnants of cool whiskey soak into his tongue. Swirling the chilled tumbler, the remaining cubes made a comforting clicking sound.

“Give ’em some big talk,” he thought, looking out over the evening cityscape from his penthouse. “That’s what they need right now. A big ol’ claptrap to keep ’em happy and stop their minds from spittin’ those ugly thoughts all over the place. Something to buy me more time.”

His cell phone vibrated, a luxurious purr. He looked at the number—some strange 212 digits—swigged another sip of liquid confidence and picked up.

“Hello, Madoff speaking,” he announced.
